Sonoma Valley Museum of Art

The Sonoma Valley Museum of Art (SVMA) is a magnet of creative energy and cultural inspiration. Its exhibitions and educational programs engage the community in the art and ideas of our time, encouraging curiosity and innovation.

Founded in 1998, SVMA's exhibitions feature primarily modern and contemporary art from local, national, and international artists. Content originates from private collections and artist studios and is borrowed from museums and galleries. Qualified guest curators plan and assemble the shows.

Now, with more than 70 exhibitions to its credit including shows of Picasso, Goya and Rembrandt, the Museum has revisited its strategic plan to stress broadening engagement with the Sonoma Valley community.

The Museum's education program, Art Rewards the Student (A.R.T.S.), has long taken arts activities into Sonoma Valley Schools. In 2010 members raised more than $46,000 to convert storage and office space in the Museum to classrooms, giving SVMA the capacity to deepen the museum experience for children and to extend educational offerings to all ages. An additional donation from Valley resident and long-time Museum supporter Calvin R. Vander Woude enabled the Museum to hire a full time Education and Public Programs Director and to increase public programs. In early 2011 the Museum added the 2500 volume Stanley Abercrombie and Paul Vieyra Art Library, an art reference resource for the community.

The Museum's location at 551 Broadway anchors the important first block south of Sonoma Town Plaza. In addition to presenting top quality exhibitions, SVMA presents several events throughout the year including MIX after-hours parties for young professionals, an annual fundraising gala known as Wet Paint, and numerous receptions and openings. The Museum partners with a variety of Sonoma organizations on events and programs throughout the year.
